Seed Terranova Onion Lucinda 5M SDS

Terranova Onion Lucinda 5M SDS is a commercial-grade hybrid short-day brown onion seed pack containing 5,000 standard size-graded, treated seeds (5M SDS). Developed by Enza Zaden and distributed by Terranova Seeds, this premium variety bridges the gap between short-day maturity and intermediate-day bulb quality, offering high-yield potential and exceptional skin retention.

Key Technical Specifications & Features

  • Crop & Type: Hybrid short-day brown onion (Allium cepa).
  • Pack Size (5M SDS): Contains 5,000 seeds (M = 1,000) supplied as Standard Seed (SDS) that is size-graded and chemically treated for disease prevention.
  • Maturity Profile: Very early to medium short-day maturity. It typically matures 5 to 10 days later than the Shinto variety.
  • Bulb Appearance: Consistent medium-to-large (65–100 mm) uniform globe shape with multi-layered, firm, dark brown skins.
  • Disease Tolerance: Strong upright blue-green foliage frame showing excellent field resistance to Downy Mildew.
  • Harvest & Mechanics: Features a thin neck and a small base plate, ensuring efficient curing. The superior skin retention allows for clean mechanical harvesting.
  • Storability: High structural integrity providing a dependable 14 to 18-week storage window, which is uncommonly long for a short-day onion.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What does "5M SDS" stand for?
The 5M denotes a pack quantity of 5,000 seeds (using the Latin mille for thousands). SDS indicates Standard Seed, meaning the seeds have undergone professional size-grading and standard industry fungicidal/protective seed treatments to boost early germination uniformity.
When is the best time to sow Onion Lucinda?
For optimal yield and bulb development in standard Southern Hemisphere regions (like Australia and New Zealand), it is ideally sown from mid to late May. Harvesting typically takes place between early and late December.
Why choose Lucinda over other short-day onion varieties?
Traditional short-day onions suffer from thin skins and low storage viability. Lucinda behaves like an intermediate onion, yielding highly firm bulbs with multiple thick skins. This allows commercial growers to mechanically harvest and store the crop for 3–4 months without rapid quality degradation.
